Profile of a sandy red arid soil
This is the profile of a sandy red arid soil, developed under an average annual precipitation of about 8.5 inches. The carbonates have reached from the upper 26 inches. A horizon of medium compaction occupies the 15-26 inch level below the surface, below which a zone of maximum lime concentration begins which continues to the depth of 63 inches. Noncalcareous parent red sand extends to 11 feet. Original photo number 132.
