Caption Ephedra torreyana growing in soil only 8 inches deep over a densely cemented caliche. Most roots deflected by caliche but many penetrate 1 to a maximum total depth of 20 inches. Ephedra is cosmopolitan in its occurrence in soil types. It is found with black grama in sand, in heavy clay tobosa flats, in shallow caliche soil with Covillea and Acacia, and in deep sandy and gravelly soils. Plant soil correlation study number 11.
