mesquite chamise dune root |
Caption |
Chamise root in a mesquite sand dune. Chamise root turned abruptly and proceeded horizontal to the surface just above zone of compaction. Mesquite roots penetrated zone of compaction and 4 feet of caliche lying immediately below. Mesquite roots were followed to a depth of 14 feet and 2 inches. Large chamise roots are profusely branched by fine fibrous roots from the surface downward. Mesquite roots offer but little competition to chamise roots in first foot below the surface. Original photo number 311.
