Caption |
Black grama root system showing finely branched roots running parallel and as shallow as one inch below the surface, also roots extending vertically and diagonally downward. Note Gutierrezia spp. tap root to right of photograph. The latter species is not able to compete against an efficient root system such as black grama possesses and soon dies out if the grass is grazed lightly enough to maintain its vitality. Plant soil correlation study number 5. Original photo number 308.
