Caption |
Chamise (Atriplex canescens) bush stem of which is eight inches in diameter showing removal of soil from around it by wind erosion in the sand dune area of the Jornada Range. The Chamise bush was probably established before any dunes were formed. Note the Yucca elata in the background. Plentiful remnants of this species persist throughout this dune area as in the surrounding black grama area. Yucca elata does not occur except where caliche is deeper than two feet. Near plant soil correlation study number 3. Original photo number 306.
