Covillea tridentata shrub and root system. Roots branch obliquely downward to 10 to 15 inches below surface when they turn and proceed parallel to the surface. Plant soil correlation study number 6. Covillea roots may extend 15 to 20 inches deep, but send numerous branches to the surface and in all directions. Soil mass incompletely occupied by roots as contrasted to a grass cover. Larger laterals are somewhat fleshy and capable of holding some moisture. Original photo number 302.
