| Caption | Co-op Well enclosure, the yucca blades sticking in the soil mark the location of young chamiza (Atriplex canescens) plants. This area was spot-seeded at intervals of 3.5 feet in August 1936, at a cost of about 5.00 dollars per acre. The test was conducted to ascertain whether or not chamiza would grow successfully in a black grama type with moderately shallow soils. A caliche substratum is encountered at 6 to 18 inches.
