Panicum enclosure, old crown and new plant of Paspalum stramineum. The old crown is about 4 inches beneath the surface. Note the mature and dead roots of the plant (dark) and the several new roots (white) about 6 inches long ending at the matches stuck in the soil. These roots probably started growing about 8 days ago following about a .35 inch rainfall. In maturity these fleshy, light colored roots turn dark, the outer parts shrivel up and are smaller in size.
