Panicum enclosure, 6-10 mile northwest of Puddle Tank. Bisect of vine mesquite (Panicum obtusum). The roots shown were uncovered by the hydraulic removal of a 3 inch vertical zone of soil. The zone of maximum root concentration is from 6 to 40 inches. The maximum penetration shown in the photograph is 60 inches. Many roots penetrated to the horizontally placed meter stick which is 44 inches below the surface. The white index sticks are marked in decimeters. These roots may be seen directly above the horizontal fork at 50 inches, and a very strong root may be seen to the right of the lower fork at a depth of 60 inches. Original Photo Number 323605. |
